Newton Solney Women’s Institute – October 2026

Tickets for the fund-raising quiz sold out quickly. I look forward to updating you all on the night in the next publication.

Our September meeting was a great success. Jane Kitto and Margaret Acford have spent the last few months putting together the History of Newton Solney WI. We all searched through various documents which prompted many memories and stories of how many things have changed since the war and indeed how many things have stayed the same.

October brings the AGM, which will be followed by a social evening for the members. In the coming months we look forward to our Christmas party, a games night and the following speakers:

November Tim Coleman The Story of the Two Crosses
February CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young
January Elaine Pritchard Rebel Women of Burton

We continue to look at new and exciting opportunities for our members, and we are open to any suggestions. Our age range is currently 40 upwards; however, we would be very pleased to see women of any age as we do endeavour to make sure there is something for everyone. If you are interested in becoming a member please contact our President, Vicki Oldknow – Tel 07980 988958

Newton Solney Tuesday Club

At our September meeting we welcomed Harry Parker, who was going to talk to us about his involvement firstly with Burton Radio, then later the free newspaper, the Burton Echo. A number of people in the room knew Harry as he had grown up in Newton Solney, where he lived at the Unicorn Inn. Harry’s father Andrew was Editor of the Burton Mail but sadly died when Harry was only 19. Following this, he did some travelling while he decided what to do. Music was his main interest, playing the guitar, so he decided to follow his passion. He joined a local band and was invited by Burton Radio to co-host a show. The host, who is also the main investor in Burton Radio, is passionate about the Local Community and promoting small businesses, charities, sports and local community issues. He also had a band, which Harry joined “Kitten Pyramid”.

Following on from this, Harry was offered his own morning show, inviting local people to talk about their charity work, local events being organised, sport and supporting new small independent businesses. Developing the Burton Radio then led to starting a local free newspaper “The Burton Echo”. Harry, who has now moved to Lichfield, is involved in the setting up of Lichfield Radio.org and a newspaper due to be launched in the next few months. He still plays in the band performing gigs around both localities. Harry was thanked warmly for giving his time to talk to us, and we wished him well in these future projects.
